Congressman Mackenzie Condemns BLS Incompetence, Calls for Change in the Bureau

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its Current Employment Statistics Preliminary Benchmark Summaryrevealing that the number of jobs added from March of 2024 to March of 2025 was 911,000 less than what was reported at the time. This is the largest revision on record and follows a similar downward revision in the 2023-2024 reporting period. Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee representing Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, responded to this report by condemning the BLS’ historic inaccuracy and calling for immediate changes to the bureau and a reduction in interest rates.

“Today’s revisions of March 2024-2025 jobs data reveal a Bureau of Labor Statistics that is presently incapable of offering our nation much more than an educated guess,” said Congressman Mackenzie. “These revisions, which are the largest on record, indicate that the slowdown in the jobs market dates all the way back to the Biden Administration — far earlier than initially thought. The BLS performs an essential function by providing up-to-date, accurate reporting to policymakers, employers, and the Federal Reserve, and there can be severe consequences for working Americans when it fails. By painting a wildly distorted picture of the 2024 labor market, the BLS likely altered the choices of the Fed and forced borrowers to contend with high interest rates for far longer than they should have. It is beyond clear that BLS requires an immediate overhaul and that the Fed must reduce interest rates.”
