Hector Soto first went to work for delivery company DoorDash out of necessity during the COVID pandemic when hours at his full-time job at a call center dried up.

Even though his primary employer brought him back as the pandemic became less severe, Soto discovered that he liked the way working as an independent contractor allowed him to provide extra income for his family. He also is a fan of the flexibility that allows him to schedule his own hours.

Bethlehem, PA Today, Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Workforce Protections Subcommittee Chairman Ryan Mackenzie (R-PA) hosted a roundtable in Bethlehem, PA titled “The Independent Workforce Speaks: Innovation Through Experience.”

The chairmen heard from a wide variety of community leaders, stakeholders, and independent contractors in the Bethlehem area who depend on clear worker classification laws so businesses and independent contractors can work together to grow the local economy.

During a floor speech this evening, Mackenzie emphasized the importance of delivering tax relief to working families in the aftermath of price increases.

A World War II Army veteran who served at Normandy and in the European theater was honored posthumously on Saturday with the presentation of a second Bronze Star Medal. Staff Sergeant William "Wash" Bybel of Coaldale, who died July 23, 2013, at the age of 94, was awarded the medal "for heroic achievement" during his actions on August 4, 1944. He served with the U.S. Army's 22nd Infantry.

Over the weekend, he stopped by Cetronia Ambulance Corps to drop off coffee and donuts for local EMS workers before joining Bethlehem Police for a ride-along.

Carbon County, PA — On Armed Forces Day, Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, who represents Carbon County as part of Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, participated in two events honoring the region’s history and its people. He began the day by presenting the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster and “V” device to the family of the late Mr. William Bybel, a World War II veteran from Carbon County.

JIM THORPE, Pa. - A congressman representing the Lehigh Valley and Carbon County visited firefighters and local emergency officials near the site of the Bear Mountain fire that has burned more than 500 acres.

Congressman Ryan Mackenzie, who represents the 7th Congressional District, met with representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources at the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency field site for an update on efforts to contain the fire.
